SELLER’S SECRETS

ā€œSales Made Me a Millionaire in My 20’s — Here’s How.ā€

Founder’s Story with Dylan Vergara

I’ve never been one to share personal numbers publicly, but I was recently listening to a fireside chat with James Altucher in preparation for the launch of Because of Sales

ā€œYou shouldn’t hit publish unless you’re afraid.ā€

If you aren’t slightly concerned, the idea isn’t original. If you have no unique way of expressing yourself, then don’t write it. So here we are. Though I don’t like airing out my business like this often, it only feels right to kick this business off with a bang.

That being said, here’s a rough overview of how we got here. If you want to listen to the full podcast episode going deeper on much of this, you can do so here.

In 2020 I was delivering Amazon packages while in college. I was the opposite of a sales guy. Sales was never even on my radar and if you would’ve suggested such a thing I’d think you were joking.

Growing up, I picked up skateboarding as my main hobby. Over the course of 15 years this turned me into somewhat of an anti-social independent type. In hindsight, this was one of the most harmful titles I put on myself as a young guy coming up.

I graduate college and find myself in a roofing sales position post-internship. While introverted, I saw this as an opportunity for a shot at a 6-figure income. I was right. I stepped out of my comfort zone greatly and in my last year of roofing sales I was pacing $180k halfway through the year before I quit.

After a few close calls up on roofs, and some other undesirable aspects of the role, I started plotting my escape plan. Roofing sales gave me the confidence both financially and in my own ability to leap to the next thing. That next thing was remote closing. Remote 1099 sales work pretty much.

I climbed that ladder, then started picking up odds and ends work for these companies in addition to closing. For most of my time solely closing, I hovered around $7k-$10k/mo while working very flexible part-time hours.

After breaking away from the W2 sales role and picking up the remote work, people started asking me how I did it. So I started showing them. I started a paid group chat for $9/mo. In this time, I transitioned to sales management in this industry.

Late 2023, I got out of my last sales management role and focused back on the sales community, but I was quickly approached with an opportunity to build an agency around the sales management work with a connection who had a solid track record in the industry. So we did.

Throughout 2024, while still running the sales community, we scaled this fractional sales management agency from 0 to 30 contracted employees, and just under $3mm in revenue in year #1. You could imagine that the effort (and earning capabilities) of 30 highly-paid professionals would compound significantly faster than just your own.

After running this insanely hectic business for the past year and a half, I realized that it no longer aligned with the reason I got into this online sales space to begin with. I had lost the freedom and flexibility that I had previously identified as important to me. In February 2025, I sold my 50% of this agency back to my partner, who still runs it to this day.

Sometime in late 2024, I officially crossed that ā€œmillionaireā€ title. Nothing changed. I went to work, joined my zoom meetings, and answered my slack messages just like any other day. While I recognize this is a cool milestone to reflect upon, the goal posts always move. In four years I went from $3,000 to my name driving for Amazon, to seeing two commas in my net worth by the age of 26. Cool story to tell I guess.

What' I’m up to today: Running my sales community, building on social media, and going all-in on Because of Sales. If you’re here for the ride, I appreciate it greatly. I see this as a 5+ year play easily.

Think Morning Brew for current and aspiring sales reps. But the ones who see sales as a vehicle to the life they want, not the life itself. Because of Sales will become the newsletter and media outlet for sales people worldwide.

Below are some short and easy-to-follow ideas that have helped me get here. In the full podcast episode linked above and below, I list out a few real world examples and use-cases for each.

General concepts that helped me get here:

  1. Study different people for different things.

  2. The path that intimidates you the most is usually the one you should take.

  3. If it doesn’t serve you and your goals, you don’t have to do it.

  4. Get out of the echo chamber.

  5. You hardly score on defense. Play offense.

  6. Dead weight stunts your progress greatly. Cut it.

  7. Just because you can buy it 10x in cash, doesn’t mean you need to or should.

  8. Avoid frivolous debt, momentum requires size. Build it ASAP.

  9. The perspectives you gain from both the highs and lows are very important

Concepts I’d reaffirm in hindsight:

  1. Keep paying for access to people ahead of you

  2. Your network is your net worth

  3. Fail faster

  4. Nobody is coming to save you

  5. The goal posts will always move no matter what

  6. Most people aren’t doing as well as they want you to think

Practical tips for the new people:

  1. Get a sales job yesterday and become obsessed

  2. Don’t spend more than $1,200/mo on rent

  3. Use a credit card like it’s a debit card now

  4. Shitty cars will crush you so get a slightly less shitty car

  5. Make up healthy and affordable hobbies

  6. Minimize video games and late nights

  7. Stay away from stupid people

  8. It’s ok to spend more for peace of mind

  9. Investing is stupid before $100k liquid

  10. $3 coffee is inconsequential

My regrets

  • Doing things because other people wanted me to

  • Misrepresenting myself towards others
