IN THIS EDITION

Well, well well…

If it isn’t another Wednesday.

Not just any Wednesday though. A special Wednesday.

Because in this edition of the BoS newsletter, we’ve got a deep-dive with someone who I used to personally sell for back in 2022.

That, and some other cool stuff I thought was relevant for you sellers.

Here’s what we’ve got in #11 for ya today:

  • Lessons from 800 closes for his online fitness business - Gabe Pluguez

  • They can fine you $1,500 for every A.I. cold call you make

  • Memes that may get you in trouble for laughing on calls

  • And more…

Who is Gabe Pluguez, and what is Default Kings?

Residing just outside of Nashville, TN; Gabe Pluguez is the cofounder of Default Kings, an online fitness coaching company that helps Christian entrepreneurs and professionals lose weight and reclaim vitality.

Gabe’s come up (in 10 bullet points)

  • Started college studying biology to become a doctor

  • Pivoted to kinesiology aiming to be a physical therapist

  • Realized traditional career paths wouldn’t satisfy his income goals

  • Launched fitness biz from a college study room at 19 years old

  • Grounded 14-hour days, went 16 months without profiting

  • Discovered “money Twitter” gained proximity to key mentors + connections

  • Second mentor helped their biz jump from $600/mo to $12k/mo

  • Dropped out of college when he was personally taking home $5k/mo

  • Thousands of sales calls later, his company has done multi 7-figs online

  • His team has now helped 800+ men lose a combined 10,000 lbs

Gabe and Default Kings co-owner, Joey Yochheim

Gabe’s sales alpha and best practices:

1. Sell like your life depends on it, because theirs might.

Gabe’s ability to close better than most for his business comes from the deep conviction he has in the process they put clients through. He personally visualizes a prospect’s transformed life and uses that belief to guide people toward the decision they need to make (even if it takes 3 calls).

Unspoken framework: Frame control + genuine care = permission to challenge.

2. You’re not too young you’re just undertrained.

Gabe has routinely closed men twice his age on behalf of his company by mastering authority and trust within his sales process. He doesn’t accommodate for his age, he earns respect through confidence, sharp positioning, and taking control of the frame dynamic early in every single call.

3. Don’t hire salespeople until your marketing is ready for it.

Early on, Gabe built a sales team purely off of “good vibes” and ended up running into many issues due to unclear numbers and a leaky funnel. As of the time being, him and his co-founder have reverted back to taking all of the sales calls (and pacing record months doing so) until they have complete confidence that a repeatable and trainable system is in place for any new hires.

4×4: Four strategies, four actionable steps you should implement into your biz/process

#1: Niche down to serve deeper

  • Default Kings shifted into targeting Christian entrepreneurs and professionals

  • Started allowing for hyper-targeted messaging to their ideal clientele

  • Pain points become easier to address and more widespread amongst client base

  • Every function from sales and marketing all the way to fulfillment gets simpler

#2: Sell based on specific outcomes, not just buzz-wordy mechanisms

  • The market has seen every fitness pitch, this alone no longer sells

  • How vs. why: Show people why you’ll solve their specific problem, not how

  • Study levels of market sophistication and interpret it as needed

  • Explain your unique product/service delivery with extreme relevance + clarity

#3 The skill alone won’t pay you, you must learn business as well

  • If starting a fitness business, simply being jacked isn’t enough to succeed.

  • Understand how to run a profitable operation as early as possible

  • Seek outside help, ideally from those who have achieved your desired outcome

  • Spend money to condense time. One is finite, the other exponential.

#4 Ensure your leads view you as an authority early on

  • Set the tone ASAP with confident body language and clear agenda

  • Ask direct questions and interrupt gently when necessary to reframe

  • Don’t over-qualify yourself, prove value through control instead of credentials

  • Use phrases like “Here’s what we’re going to do...” to lead decisively
